The rest of the formula is a series of If statements. The If statement is used extensively in Crystal Reports development (along with its cousin the Select Case function). It’s is a series of tests that checks the value of the Calendar Month medium name alias and creates a date via the data function using the numeric value for the month (JAN = 1, FEB = 2, etc.) and a 1 for the day (the day for us is irrelevant; we’re only interested in the month. We couldn’t use a real day value even if wanted to because we don’t have access to one in this query. All we have is the year, month, and week.

Now that we’ve created our date formula, click Save and Close at the top left of the Formula Editor. Back in the Design tab we’ll place our new formula in the Detail section to the right of Revenue and make it bold.

When you go the Preview tab, your report should look like Figure 6.17.
